Cranksgiving 2012

As some of you may have noticed from my Facebook postings yesterday Jayden and I participated in the Bike Cleveland‘s 1st annual Cranksgiving charity ride. Here was the basic idea, ride your bike to 4 of 7 grocery stores in various zones (east, west, north, south of downtown Cleveland) and purchase the food item(s) specified for that store. Then after all the stops have been made head back to the starting point, Phoenix Coffee on 9th, to donate items to St. Augustine and University Settlement Hunger Centers to help them feed needy families.

What a great idea and an excellent ride thru the downtown Cleveland area.  It wasn’t a race but rather a great group of riders navigating the city roads for a great cause. From what I heard 45 riders participated collecting roughly $700 in food donations.

Originally I wasn’t sure that I was going to be able to participate but circumstances came up where Jayden and I needed to get out of the house and this worked great. So I hitched up the trail-a-bike to my rig and we were off. I really wasn’t sure that a 4 year old was going to be able to pedal the entire route even assisted like he was (and with a more comfortable saddle then what comes on the bike) but he powered thru the ride with his back seat navigating and songs when the miles seemed to drag between stops.  Stops were determined but what needed to be picked up (one stop was for mac-n-cheese and another pb&j staple foods in any 4yr old diet) so our route at times zig zagged a bit but it worked out great.

And in the end I think he understood the good thing we we’re doing for folks less fortunate and he got to ride his bike amongst tall buildings, Lake Erie, and over/under some cool bridges. Once we dropped off our food and headed out for a post ride meal he was already asking when the next ride was!! Sounds like CX might be nezzzxt. 😉

Thanks goes out to Bike Cleveland, Phoenix Coffee, Pedal for Prizes, and all the volunteers that made this ride possible! We are looking forward to the 2nd annual ride and we will be bringing more riders to enjoy in the fun!!

Another great post as always Sean. Next year bring this up before you do it, and I apologize if you did and I missed it, so that perhaps I can come up from Canton with my son and join in. Sounded like a good thing!
